Real Weight Loss Answers

Just cuz you say it doesn’t make it so.. My mother used to tell me that repeatedly as a child, and it is the one  fact that remains true years into studying weight loss and nutrition.

Why do we believe that it is portion size and food choice that can make us thin and attractive? It is the basis of all major diets and diet books that flood the market place and tell us repeatedly to buck and and follow them and we will be skinny and happy if we just never eat anything over a 4 on a glycemic index. Why do we believe them?? It doesn’t seem to work all that well..umm anyone read the reports lately on stunning obesity epidemics in Canada? If a politician told us this ‘fact’ we would impeach him. It doesn’t hold as a theory because nobody can seem to do it!

Yet we sit there and berate ourselves for our inability to conform to 1/2c. of rice and a banana chip for lunch. At what point in our lives did this obsession with food and diet become ok and normal? Why is it that I know the calorie content of EVERYTHING yet am still 15lbs above my ideal weight? Why does my weight on the scale today determine my mood in the day? and Why does the sentence ‘I had a good day today’ relate not to helping the homeless but to turning down donuts at the staff birthday party?? What in the world is going on? Is anyone ready to get the heck off this ride?

I woke up the other day and decided to look at our diet and health industry with the eyes of an extraterrestrial that had been explained the basics of human culture but say it was explained by a man and he left out the part where 80% of my brain would be obsessed with food and looks. I would think all you humans were totally nuts and I would be on the next starship home.

So please stay with me here..The real question is..drum roll please… is not what and how much should I eat? The real question should be..Why don’t I know what and how much to eat? Small change, way different question.

The simple answer is you totally do. We all do and the idea that all of our different bodies should be eating off of a one size fits all plan is irresponsible at best and straight up lunacy at the worst.

My theory is ( oh, yes I have a theory) that from a tender age of around 10 we start deciding with our minds and stop deciding with our bodies.  Children eat like skinny women. Ever notice that? They eat until they are full then they put down the fork. Most of us on the other hand are mesmerized by the skinny women eating and stare at her, our mouths agape as she nibbles a piece of appy and actually puts it down to finish a sentence enjoying the conversation , (the nerve of her!) while we are just staring at her like a monkey in a zoo.

I really believe the actual two questions that you can change your relationship with food are : Why do I eat when I am not hungry? And what does my body want to eat?

I will tackle these questions next. Stay tuned.
